Description:
I choose to do my analysis and evaluation on Disney Princess: Time for the Ball by Lara Bergen illustrated by the Disney Storybook artists. The story was based of Cinderella they have just renamed it. It was written by the Disney Company. Time for the Ball is about Cinderella hears about the Prince having a ball and he will find his princess there. Cinderella’s step mother heard that she wants to go the ball and she doesn’t want Cinderella to go to it. She wants her daughters go to it and she know that the prince will fall in love with Cinderella because she is beautiful and she is nice and sweet. Another hand her daughters aren’t nice and they don’t have manners and they want everything but they don’t want to do anything for anybody else. Cinderella’s friends which are the birds and mice help put together a beautiful dress to wear to the ball. She was ready to go when the step sisters tore her dress to pieces. They left and she went to the garden crying. Her fairy Godmother came down and did her magic and turned her dress to a beautiful dress and her mice into coach men and the pumpkin into a carriage. She was told she had till twelve o’clock and then the spell will be done. She went and danced with the prince and they were falling in love. Then the clock started to strike twelve and she took off running down the stairs where she dropped one of her glass slippers. The prince picked it up and told his men that they were to find the girl that was wearing it because he wanted to marry her. They went to the house where Cinderella was living and the step sisters tried to fit their cubby feet into the tiny slipper and they couldn’t. The prince was about to leave when Cinderella came down the stairs with the matching pair. They got married and lived happily ever after.
This story has some stereo types for women can only be beautiful, skinny, and have small feet. It also shows that you have to wear big beautiful dresses to pretty. It also shows s that men have the power and that women just need to dress pretty and have polite manners. The voices that are heard in this story are the stepmother and the prince. The voices that are missing are that of a strong woman saying that it doesn’t matter you look like it is all about what is on the inside that does matter. Looks are just for now because over time everyone goes through changes and then they look different. But what you have on the inside will never grow old.
I have to admit who doesn’t like the Cinderella story but when you step back and take a look at it. What are we letting our little girls believe? I don’t want my girls to think that they need to be waiting for a prince charming to come and sweep them off their feet. I want to them to believe themselves and to love themselves that is what is important.

This is a good book to write about because many fairy tales can be rather limiting and there is much to analyze. That said, I would like to see more here about the book, the illustrations, and a deeper analysis about the story itself in relation to young children. Is everyone white? Are there issues of classism in addition to the sexism? This feels like a good start. Missing a graphic of the book.
